About the Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimating fuel cost ahead of a road trip helps with budgeting and comparing driving against other travel options like flying. The calculation depends on three factors that most people know roughly but rarely combine: distance, their vehicle's real-world fuel efficiency, and current gas prices.
This calculator divides trip distance by your vehicle's miles-per-gallon rating to find gallons needed, then multiplies by price per gallon — with an option to double the distance for a round trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use my car's advertised MPG or real-world MPG?
Real-world MPG is usually more accurate, since advertised EPA estimates are measured under controlled conditions. Highway driving, city stop-and-go traffic, cargo weight, and driving style all affect actual fuel economy.
Does this account for fluctuating gas prices along a route?
No — it uses a single gas price you enter for the whole trip. For long trips crossing regions with different prices, you may want to average or estimate based on your expected route.
How can I improve my car's real fuel efficiency?
Maintaining proper tire pressure, avoiding aggressive acceleration/braking, reducing excess cargo weight, and keeping up with routine maintenance are among the most commonly cited ways to improve real-world MPG.
